Fundamentally, The Twit Cleaner exists to help you become a better Twitter citizen - and to surround yourself with the best possible people.
Of course, there is value to following news feeds (all links) or celebrities (no follow back) etc but here are some tips on how you can be a better member of the Twitter community.
Retweet
Retweeting (whether old style "RT @name message" or the new style) is a great way to do several things. First, it shares valuable material with your followers. Second, it's a way of saying thank you, & passing kudos to the person you're retweeting.
Obviously the more you retweet, the more people are likely to retweet you, spreading your message far beyond simply those currently following you. This, of course, is also likely to get you more followers.
Now, you don't want to retweet too much (or only retweet), because also important is:
Personal Content
Just posting links all the time - while informative, doesn't give people a feel for the kind of person you are. People don't want to connect with a company (or a bot), they want to interact with other people. That's what's so great about Twitter, it enables human connection in a way that blogs & old media really don't.
Now, this doesn't mean telling everyone what you had for lunch, necessarily (yawn!), but remember - you're a human first, and a content spreader or news provider second.
Engage! Connect! Communicate!
@reply to people who say interesting things. Reply to those that talk to you. Firstly, it's polite. Secondly, it's a great way to make friends, discover exciting new opportunities, and, frankly, one of the greatest things about Twitter.
Now obviously people with zillions of followers won't necessarily be able to reply to every single comment made to them (much like restaurants, the rules for celebrities are slightly different than for us normal folk), but at least make an effort.
If you never talk to anyone, how are you any different from an RSS feed? Youtube, TV or a newspaper? You're not. Besides, there are so many wonderful people out there - it's fun! Start chatting!
Variety is important
Posting the same link over & over is tedious - and people switch off from that very quickly. If you're losing followers, or all your followers are dead accounts? That'll explain why.
People aren't stupid. They're not on Twitter coz they want the same thing repetitively rammed down their throats. If they wanted that, they'd be watching adverts on TV.
Same goes for posting the exact same tweet over and over. That's just ridiculous. Now of course, if you have a product launch, or you want to attract people in different timezones, you may need to repeat yourself a bit - but mix it up. It's not hard to rephrase things, try different wording & so on. If nothing else it keeps you more interesting - but also, it's basic human psychology that people respond to different stimuli (verbal, aural, visual, mental imagery, etc). So, it's actually smart to vary your message - you're more likely to appeal to a greater audience by doing so.
Don't go crazy
While Twitter can be a very exciting place to be, churning out thousands of updates a day is just going to flood people's tweetstreams.
If you're following 40k people, it can be very easy to forget, but 90% of active users follow fewer than 2000 people. If you include all the half-arsed dead accounts out there, it's probably closer to 98%. If you are posting 50 times a day, you're going to flood everyone else they care about off their front page.
I've analysed a ton of accounts, and it's actually pretty hard to set off the alarms in this regard - & of course, if all you're doing is chatting to people, that's totally fine - since conversations with them only go to them (& anyone else following them). If every tweet you do is public though? Maybe tone it down a little, for the sake of everyone else out there. Quality, not quantity, remember?
Getting feedback
If you want to know how you're doing on all these points? When you're logged into The Twit Cleaner now, on the front page, there's a link "How do I look to The Twit Cleaner." That'll tell you exactly how you're doing. It'll also give you tips on how to improve your game & get even better in the future.
The basics
Other than that - try to follow people back (if they appeal). Don't @ tons of people in one tweet (except RT's & follow friday, of course) - either talk to one person, or just DM them.
Oh, & one last point - don't sell crap on Twitter. Seriously, if people want white teeth, they'll google it, or, & here's a crazy thought, talk to a dentist.

I got news for you. Twitter has already set the rules of what can be or can't be done on their platform.
Enough with the self appointed Twitter Police!!!
If you don't like what a person is doing in your twitstream BLOCK them!
The beauty of Twitter is that it is open to all. Let's not spoil it by applying silly arbitrary rules.
There's a couple of things I think you may be missing here.
For a start - The Twit Cleaner applies to people you're following, not those that follow you. Ie, blocking isn't an option, only unfollowing. If you do want to look at those that are following you, I recommend http://twitblock.org - they do a really good job of that side of things.
So, once that's out the way - then we're just looking at categorising types of behaviours. It's 100% up to you who you choose to follow or not, all we do is help you understand the types of people you're following.
For example, a lot of people really enjoy following newsbots. It's how they keep up with what is happening in the world. Now, newsbots never interact & always post links. However, when they're all grouped together, you can easily go "Oh, those guys are all good, I'll keep them all."
The reports & the description above are informative, nothing more. We're not here to tell you who to follow, just to give you information so you can manage your stream better.
Thanks for your reply.
Managing a stream better is one thing. I am sure you provide a great service in this respect.
"So, once that's out the way - then we're just looking at categorising types of behaviours. It's 100% up to you who you choose to follow or not, all we do is help you understand the types of people you're following." - Maybe I'm dumb but I can't see anything in your post that suggests this. And it seems that this paragraph is rather at odds with your opening line!
My objection to the post is that you are telling people how to behave. The title of your post attests to this as well as the content. Most of the reactions posted so far are also of the same ilk. Surely you're not trying to argue to the contrary?
I never suggested that you were telling us who to follow. It was I who suggested that people can choose to block (and I would add in this case to unfollow). Not because I want to tell people what to do, just simply pointing out their options if they choose to exercise them. Quite frankly, I am sick of self appointed Twitter Police telling people how to behave. @guykawasaki and @chrisvoss have both had something to say about this in the last couple of weeks.
As I said, I'm sure you provide a great service for ferreting out who to follow. Being a good twitter citizen is another subject altogether however. and that was what your post was about, and that is what I originally addressed, not your service.
You're very welcome to behave however you want to behave Phil. I'm not the boss of you *smile*
Hey don't be so grumpy. I think if every twitterer read this the experience would be all the better. New followers take time to work this stuff out and can disengage many people in the mean time.
Nowhere in Jeff's post do I see anything about him appointing himself as "Twitter police". His suggestions and recommendations, on the other hand, make sense and are probably common sense for responsible social media use. Not only on Twitter, but on the other SM sites as well.
Excellent article I wish I had seen this earlier in my tweeting hisortweeting. thanks for taking the time to do this .
Sure thing Dennis. Really just a collation of information that's already out there, but good to have it in one place.
This is SUCH useful information - thanks
You're very welcome! :)

Thanks Jeff - that's a fantastic read. Have sent it out to all my followers, I know a bunch of them will enjoy it too.
I'll back again for sure, thanks for great article :D
Si, This is an excellent intro and reminder list for folks using twitter. You have a real gift explaining the subject. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the great info!
Good info for those new to Twitter, and good reiteration to us old timers.
Thank you!

Thank you. This is great. I get a kick from the wording of your descriptions and explanations. The report is edifying and helpful. Marge
Twit Cleaner is helpful and edifying. Their original use of words added to the experience.
SiDawson is a person that I take as a friend from the gitgo.
*smile* thank you Billy. The feeling is mutual
Robert J. Love I think this a good starting point for Twitter. Although, it is my understanding some folk don't like to read re-tweets. Maybe they are especially in the know and recieving circular reporting. Anyway, there is a balance to be struck . . .
People don't like to read retweets? Really? Wow.
I know if ALL someone is doing is retweeting like crazy, it can get a bit tedious. If, however, you want to avoid all retweets, hmm, I'm not sure, exactly, how you would go about doing that (other than by leaving Twitter altogether). Everybody retweets, at least now & then.
Spot on Jeff - have tweeted to my followers and will repeat again a few times in future so hopefully most will see in timeline.
Jeff? Provided you typed your comment in the right window, the name is actually Si.. but hey, either way - thank you. Glad you liked it - and are finding it useful for your followers (always a good sign) :)
[ -] talking to people (not just at them), you'll be fine. That's the gist of it. I have a blog post up that goes into it in more detail. It should be pointed out though: there are many Twitter [ -]

Si, am a big fan of your app, and like the common-sense approach! You get my vote!
*smile* thanks very much Lisa!
i just want to say "thank you "
Hah - just used this article to reply to a follower spamming me with their "listen to my music" links. Love it!
Ha! Glorious.
Now he's arguing with me about why what he's doing works - 25% of people follow him back. Clueless -
Sounds it. Easiest solution is just to block & move on.
This is amazing. I wish I had used this app sooner. You find out which of your followers talk, drop links, spam, @ too many people. Its a good too run. Thanks.
You're very welcome Terrill. Glad you like it!
I'm so glad I found this! Thank You so much for your advice. I really couldve used this when I first started. I hate learning things by making mistakes. I'll be sure to check in with you from time to time to help me keep a clean TL,and stay a good tweeter. *HUGS*
Awesome tool thanks! And the tips are excellent too.
Fantastic, thank you!
These are some good tips! I'm probably guilty of tweeting a bit too many links/RT's, which I'll try to hold back on. Love Twitter though, such a great place to chat to people.
I couldn't agree more, re Twitter being such a marvellous place.
Great article. I have tried to be good. I have been good. Now I have my feelings hurt for potential dodgy. I really want to know how I jumped up 4 or 500 followers that I never clicked to follow because are crap any way. How can I interact with them if there is nothing to interact to? Yeah, i am tweeting links because I am trying too boost my follows on my blog. At least mine are all different instead of read the same darn thing over and over. tha is why I like your advice and thanks for the service. but I am still hurt.
If all you're tweeting is links - yeah that's dodgy - but if you're tweeting content and engagement (talking to your followers) and RT good content - and doing that 70% of the time, and he other 30% is links to your blog - you'll do just fine!
Hi Malika - sorry for not getting back sooner - comment notifications switched themselves off for some random reason, so I wasn't told about your comment.
Coach Debra is bang on the money. As long as you're engaging with people, you're fine.
If you've automatically jumped up 4 or 500 people, that would suggest to me that you've left an app somewhere that is following for you, without your permission. I suggest checking here http://twitter.com/settings/applications and revoking access to anything that looks suspicious. Of course, running a Twit Cleaner report will also help you unfollow those that are (as you say) crap.
Finally, I wouldn't worry too much about your "potentially dodgy" rating. The ratings are constantly updated - since everyone's behaviour is constantly changing. If you check back again now (http://twitcleaner.com/howami), I wouldn't be surprised if you're back to being awesome again.
I have a similar reaction - I tweet what is interesting to me, including RT what others send me &/or providing links to insightful articles. I don't see why this earns me "potentially dodgy behavior" status.
Hi Nadine
I'm not sure why you decided to post here exactly what you DMed me. Perhaps I didn't respond quickly enough? (sorry, I was in the shower).
What I said to Malika below also applies here.
Additionally, Twit Cleaner is geared towards people interacting with each other. Most of the categories are based around identifying behaviour that is "non interactive" (eg, only posting links, never replying, etc).
While RTing is an excellent thing to do (and, frankly, on my own account I know I don't RT enough - and Twit Cleaner constantly tells me so), if that's all you're doing, then that indicates:
a) that you're not interacting with people (by answering or tweeting them)
b) that you're using Twitter as a broadcast medium (like TV) rather than an interactive one (like facebook).
As I said to Malika, don't worry about it too much - your categorisation will alter as your behaviour does (in fact, it adjusted itself in between your first panicked DM and this later one). It will continue to adjust.
If you simply start talking to people a little more, instead of talking AT them so much, in half an hour it's likely you won't be in any dodgy category at all.
Thanks, for the clear advice: appreciate.
Thanks very much for a great piece! I tend to take 1-to-1 conversations to DM instead of spamming everyone with @ replies. I'd love to see an analysis of the people I follow who publicly shout back and forth in insular conversation so I can unfollow them.
I like to keep the conversations in the stream. In order to keep it interesting for other followers, I often first RT what I'm replying to, and then reply. But if I want to talk to someone in more than 140ch - then I take it to email. I think the whole point of twitter is that it is a public conversation.
Yep. You're right on with that. I'm more or less exactly the same.
One or two replies back and forth aren't a huge deal. The only people that will see them are people who are following both of you (in which case, they're probably interested in both of you anyway).
In terms of analysing who's talking to each other - the simplest solution is: if you're not seeing you, it's not bothering you, so there's nothing to be done. If you do see a conversation that's boring you, simply unfollow one of the people, and the whole thing will drop from your timeline. Super simple.
I'd only add that if you are pushing your tweets to FB and you're having a conversation, it's really poor etiquette and your FB friends are likely to get pretty POed about it. So, I recommend - don't push your tweets to FB. The rules, the etiquette are very different.
I like to know WHY I lost followers. It has helped me tailor my tweets to appeal to the folks who DIDN'T leave!
I was blasting my followers with too many public tweets but Si (through TwitCleaner) showed me the light. So now I'm donating $1,000,000,000 from America's debt to Si Dawson. As soon as those people in Washington answer my tweets, Si, then we'll owe you that. You'll be in line behind China but in front of Uganda.
Ha! Love it :)
very nice. thanks you. this helps
What a great, and well written article. I'm new to Twitter (well old in time but new in usage) and everything you say here makes great sense, it's also remarkably polite. I've written my own articles about this, but my tone is much more agressive than yours - which makes a nice offset. In fact, I think I'm going to link to you from my posts (soon as I get time - AKA take a breather from exploring this new world).
Thanks for the tools - I will be RT'ing you.
Oh! Well thank you very much (on all counts).

I appreciate what I learn of twit cleaner. thank you.
You are very welcome :)
I love your product! Well done! :)
